The stud was founded in 1981 when the stallion Nebo More Magic and the brood mares Pantycynghorion Eirlys and Wenallt Dawn were purchased and these three formed the foundations on which the stud was based. The stud has remained small with never more than six breeding mares at any one time, preferring to stick to quality and type rather than quantity.

Many prizewinners and champions have been produced at home and abroad from the foundation stock, the highlight being Tardebigge Esther being crowned Youngstock Champion at the Royal Welsh Show in 1990. The following year Esther was Champion at the Glanusk Show, the only filly to have achieved this. Esther has herself produced two Royal Welsh winners as well as the Female Youngstock Champion at the Welsh Pony & Cob Society's Millennium Show in 2002 and Youngstock Champion at the Lampeter Show. In total there have been ten Royal Welsh winners produced at the Tardebigge stud.

Female stock from Tardebigge have gone on to form the basis of many successful studs in this country and abroad.
